There are many things to do in Boulder, which was previously inhabited by the Arapahoe Indians. Chautauqua Park is a great place to picnic and hike. Youngsters will enjoy climbing on boulders and hiking the shorter trails of the park. During the summer months, the park promotes various activities, such as picnics, concerts, and films. Future scientists will love the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). They will be able to stick their hands in tornadoes and observe other weather phenomena. The six-mile-long Boulder Creek Path offers tons of fun. Youngsters can tube down the creek, hike, and even fish at the Kids’ Fishing Pond. For kids who thrive on challenges, there is Mallory Cave. This short, rigorous hike requires climbing over boulders and scaling a steep slope. Kids will love this hike! What is better than an outdoor pool on a hot summer day? Scott Carpenter Pool and Park offers a cool swim and a skateboard park -- Don’t forget your towel!
The Pearl Street Mall in Boulder is definitely an adventure. It is a pedestrian-only shopping district lined with clothing boutiques, art galleries, health food store, restaurants, bookstores, New Age shops and more. What makes it more than an outdoor shopping mall are the street performers - dozens of them during the warm months - who play harmonicas, steel drums, banjos, classical guitars, saxophones, mandolins – in hopes you’ll toss some money in their hats. You’ll also see magicians, jugglers, sword swallowers, and mimes.
National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a world-renowned facility dedicated to the study of the atmosphere, climate, weather, and the sun. The kids can stick their hand in the center of a tornado, touch a neon gas tube of “lightning”, or check out an air sampler that looks like a lunar landing module. Quiz yourself about the sun, and set in motion a model demonstrating the theory of chaos, another contributing factor in Colorado’s crazy weather.
