"colored-red"
Colorado got it's name from the Spanish word for "colored-red." It is often called "Colorful Colorado" because of the magnificent mountains, rivers and plains. This phrase is used on maps, car license plates, tourist information and souvenirs. But Colorado's official nickname is the "Centennial State" because it became a state in 1876, 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
